Captain’s report on TEGS Meeting at NEW ZEALAND Golf Club - Tuesday July 14th, 2026

When I arrived at the Club at 7-30 it was nice and cool and a little breezy so ideal conditions for golf. Like most courses the hot weather had turned the fairways brown, so the course was playing fast and there was a premium for accuracy particularly from the tee. The greens were in excellent condition and a challenging pace.

13 members and 1 guest starting on 2 tees took up the challenge for the Burton Cup. Given the conditions scoring was very respectable, the median score was 29 points.

Because many of the morning players were not playing in the afternoon we presented the morning prizes before lunch.

Nearest the pin on the third was won by Bob Pickles and nearest the pin in 2 on the 17th was won by John Greasley. The best front nine was won by Alan Rowbotham with 17 points and the best back 9 was won by Ken Proctor with 18 points.

Turning to the main prizes, third prize went to Nick Longman with 33 points, the runner up was Chris Green on 34 points and the winner of the Burton Cup with 36 points was Norman Oldmeadow, congratulations.

After an excellent lunch 3 pairs returned to the course to play the afternoon Greensomes for the St Helens Cup. By this time the temperature had risen considerably so all 3 pairs used buggies which they said was essential to enable them to get around the course. The winners were Nick Longman and Brian Clark with 35 points with David MacDonald and Steve Whelan in second place on 32 points.

Our thanks go to Bob Pickles our Match Manager and Keith Waite our Match Secretary for organising an excellent and enjoyable day.

Our next meeting is at Hankley Common on 25th August.
